Pregnancy and Acupuncture
Pregnancy brings joy and anticipation, but also its share of discomforts and emotional challenges. If you’re grappling with morning sickness, or anxiety, or have concerns due to past experiences like miscarriage, acupuncture could be the gentle, supportive treatment you need.
Is Acupuncture Safe In Pregnancy?
Acupuncture, an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is renowned for easing a variety of pregnancy symptoms, including heartburn, swelling in the legs, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, back pain, headaches, and morning sickness. Particularly beneficial when medication options are limited during pregnancy, acupuncture offers a natural alternative for relief.
Scientific Research Supports The Effectiveness Of Acupuncture.
Acupuncture is very effective in reducing pregnancy-related discomforts. I love treating pregnant women, it’s a safe and relaxing treatment. It works by balancing your body’s energy flow.
According to Chinese medical theory, imbalances or blockages of qi (vital life force energy) along your body’s meridians can disrupt organ communication. Acupuncture needles unblock these areas, helping your body heal itself and regain homeostasis. TCM also includes herbal medicine, cupping, gua sha, tui na (Chinese medical massage), moxibustion (moxa), holistic approaches to diet, nutrition, lifestyle, meditation, qi gong, and tai chi.
Many pregnant women find significant relief from acupuncture for issues like
- Severe morning sickness, providing quick and effective relief.
- Sciatic Pain
- Itching during pregnancy
- Sinusitis
- Constipation
- Exhaustion
- Insomnia
- Breech and posterior positions of the baby
- Urinary Infections
- Heartburn
- High Blood Pressure
- Low Lying Placenta
- Small for date Baby
- Anxiety and Depression
It’s also a safe alternative for managing pregnancy-induced aches and pains in the back, joints, and pelvic area.
Preparation for Labour
As your due date approaches, acupuncture can help prepare your body for labor by stimulating hormonal changes and assisting with cervical ripening. In the postpartum period, acupuncture aids in emotional balance and physical pain relief, potentially easing symptoms of postpartum depression.

Hello, I have done accupuncture in the past but was not successful with it, but I still believe it all depends on the severity of the problem. Im amazed accupuncture can do a lot of things now than before. Do you get a doctors approval before treating the pregnant women? also do you do accupunture to bursitis and plantar facilitis.
Hi, Arien I’ve treated a lot of women with bursitis and plantar fasciitis with success, both are incredibly painful. You don’t need a doctor’s approval. You do need to make sure you go to an acupuncturist who is qualified and is a member of an association. I’m a member of TCMCI, and they ensure you have the correct training and are fully insured. Your acupuncturist will take a detailed account of your medical history, and medication, they will taylor a treatment plan that will help you.
