Why does my lower back hurt when I stand up, bend over, or walk upstairs?
Common causes and how acupuncture may help.
If you have to brace yourself before standing up, bending over, getting out of bed, or walking upstairs because you know your lower back is going to hurt, you’re not alone.
Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people come to see me at Galway Acupuncture Hub.
Sometimes it’s a dull ache that’s always there. Other times it’s a sharp pain that catches you unexpectedly or shoots into your hips, buttocks, or down your leg. For some people, even simple everyday jobs become something they dread.
One lady came to see me recently because her lower back pain had become unbearable.
Every time she walked up the stairs, she had to stop and prepare herself because she knew the pain would shoot through her lower back and down her leg.
By the time she came to see me, she rated her pain as 8 out of 10.
After just one treatment, her pain had reduced to 3 out of 10.
Every person responds differently, but seeing someone walk out of the clinic more comfortably than when they walked in is one of the reasons I love what I do.
Why does lower back pain happen?
There isn’t one single cause.
Lower back pain can develop after lifting something awkwardly, spending long hours sitting at a desk, repetitive work, gardening, horse riding, an old injury, or simply because the muscles and joints have become irritated over time.
Sometimes the pain stays in the lower back. Sometimes it travels into the buttocks or down the leg, making walking, climbing stairs, or getting comfortable in bed much more difficult.
Whatever the cause, your body is telling you that something isn’t working as well as it should.
How does acupuncture help lower back pain?
Many people choose acupuncture because they want to find a natural way to manage their pain.
Acupuncture may help to:
- Reduce pain and muscle tension.
- Improve movement and flexibility.
- Ease stiffness.
- Help you move with greater confidence.
- Support your body’s natural healing processes.
Every treatment I give is tailored to the individual because no two people experience back pain in exactly the same way.
You don’t have to live with back pain!
One of the saddest things I hear is:
“I just thought it was something I had to put up with.”
Back pain may become common as we get older, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal or that you should simply accept it.
If your back pain is stopping you from enjoying life, exercising, sleeping well, working comfortably, or even walking upstairs without fear, I’d love to help.
Together, we’ll find out what’s contributing to your pain and create a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my lower back pain worse when I stand up?
When you stand, the muscles, joints and discs in your lower back begin to take more load. If these tissues are irritated or inflamed, standing up can trigger pain.
Why does my back hurt when I bend over?
Bending places extra stress on the muscles, ligaments and discs in your lower back. Pain when bending may indicate irritation or strain, although the exact cause varies from person to person.
Can acupuncture help lower back pain?
Some people find acupuncture helps reduce pain, improve movement and ease muscle tension. Every person is different, so treatment is tailored to your individual symptoms.
When should I see someone about lower back pain?
If your back pain isn’t improving, is affecting your daily life, or keeps coming back, it’s worth getting it assessed. Early treatment may help you return to normal activities sooner and can reduce the likelihood of ongoing problems.
