Why Don’t I Feel Like Myself Anymore? (And How to Reset Your Nervous System)

The Short Answer

If you don’t feel like yourself anymore, you’re not alone. Whether you’re here in Galway or reading this from somewhere else in the world, months or even years of stress, anxiety, poor sleep, chronic pain, hormonal changes, or a difficult life event can leave you feeling like you’ve become a different person.

The good news is that, in most cases, you haven’t lost yourself. Your nervous system may simply have become stuck in a protective survival mode. When you understand why this happens, everything starts to make much more sense—and with the right support, it can often be changed.

Is This What Your Life Feels Like Right Now?

Perhaps you’ve found yourself saying:

  • “I just don’t feel like me anymore.”
  • “I’m exhausted, but I can’t switch my brain off.”
  • “Everything feels like such an effort.”
  • “I can’t enjoy the things I used to love.”
  • “I’m constantly on edge.”
  • “I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

Maybe you’re cancelling plans because you can’t face going out.

You used to laugh more, but now everything feels heavy.

You feel guilty because your partner, children, or friends are getting a version of you that doesn’t feel like the real you.

You lie awake at night thinking…

“What’s happened to me?”

Or perhaps the thought that’s hardest to admit is this one:

“What if this is just who I am now?”

If you’re nodding your head while reading this, I want you to know something.

You are not alone.

And more importantly…

You probably haven’t lost yourself.

You Haven’t Lost Yourself – Your Nervous System Is Trying to Protect You

One of the biggest misconceptions about anxiety is that it means you’re weak, broken, or simply not coping.

In my experience, that’s rarely what’s happening.

Imagine the smoke alarm in your kitchen.

When there’s a real fire, you want it to sound.

It could save your life.

But imagine it became so sensitive that every time you made toast, the alarm screamed.

The alarm isn’t broken.

It’s doing exactly what it was designed to do.

It’s just reacting when it doesn’t need to.

Your nervous system can behave in exactly the same way.

After months—or sometimes years—of stress, emotional strain, illness, chronic pain, hormonal changes, or trauma, your brain can become exceptionally good at spotting danger.

The problem is that it starts seeing danger where there isn’t any.

  • Driving to work.
  • Going shopping.
  • Meeting friends.
  • Opening your emails.
  • Getting on your horse.
  • Trying to fall asleep.

Your nervous system isn’t trying to make your life difficult.

It’s trying to keep you safe.

Unfortunately, when that protective response stays switched on for too long, it can begin affecting every part of your life.

Why You’re So Tired All the Time

One of the things I hear most often in clinic is:

“Lucy, I’ve had blood tests. They’ve all come back normal… so why do I feel completely exhausted?”

Imagine driving your car everywhere with one foot pressing the accelerator while the other rests on the brake.

Eventually, the engine starts to struggle.

That’s very similar to what can happen when your nervous system spends weeks or months in a constant state of alertness.

Even when you’re sitting on the sofa watching television, your body may still be preparing for danger.

No wonder you’re exhausted.

No wonder you don’t feel like yourself.

The Person You Miss Is Still There

This is the part I really want you to remember.

The confident…

Calm…

Happy…

Relaxed version of you hasn’t disappeared.

They haven’t been replaced.

They’ve simply become hidden beneath a nervous system that’s been working overtime to protect you.

One of the most rewarding moments in my work is hearing someone say:

“Lucy… I finally feel like myself again.”

Those words remind me why I do what I do.

Because that’s what most people are really looking for.

Not perfection.

Not feeling anxious again.

They simply want their life back.

Why Previous Things May Not Have Helped

You may already have tried:

  • Thinking positively.
  • Relaxation apps.
  • Deep breathing.
  • Supplements.
  • Holidays.
  • Reading self-help books.
  • Telling yourself to “just get on with it.”

If those things haven’t worked, please don’t see that as a personal failure.

Many of them focus on managing symptoms.

But if your nervous system still believes you’re under threat, it will continue producing the same protective responses.

That’s why understanding what’s happening is often the first real step towards change.

How I Can Help

When someone comes to see me, the first thing I do isn’t reach for a needle.

  1. I listen.
  2. I want to understand your story.
  3. What’s changed?
  4. When did you stop feeling like yourself?
  5. What does a typical day feel like for you?

From there, we create a plan that’s tailored to you.

For people attending my clinic in Loughrea, that may include acupuncture and other supportive techniques to help calm an overactive nervous system, reduce physical tension, and encourage your body to move out of survival mode.

If you’re outside Ireland—or you’re a rider struggling with fear, anxiety, or loss of confidence—we can also work together online using coaching techniques designed to help change unhelpful protective patterns.

Every person is different.

That’s why every plan is different.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can anxiety really make me feel like a different person?

Yes. Many people describe feeling disconnected from the person they used to be. Prolonged stress and anxiety can affect your energy, sleep, concentration, emotions, and enjoyment of life. Although it can feel frightening, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve permanently changed. Often, it’s a sign that your nervous system has been under strain for a long time.

Why am I so tired when all my tests are normal?

Feeling constantly exhausted doesn’t always mean there’s an underlying medical illness. Living with ongoing stress or anxiety can place your nervous system on high alert, which uses a great deal of physical and emotional energy. However, it’s always important to speak to your GP to rule out medical causes of persistent fatigue.

Can acupuncture help with anxiety and stress?

Some people find acupuncture helpful for reducing stress, encouraging relaxation, improving sleep, and supporting overall wellbeing. Every person is different, so results vary. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your symptoms and whether acupuncture may be appropriate for you.

How many treatments might I need?

The number of treatments depends on your individual circumstances, how long you’ve been experiencing symptoms, and your overall health. We’ll discuss a personalised treatment plan during your first appointment.

Do you offer online appointments?

Yes. If you’re unable to attend the clinic in Loughrea, I also offer online coaching sessions for people experiencing anxiety, stress, or riding confidence challenges.

Can I claim through my health insurance?

Yes. Galway Acupuncture Hub is recognised by VHI, Laya Healthcare, and Irish Life Health. Depending on your policy, you may be able to claim back part of the cost of your acupuncture treatment. If you’re unsure what your policy covers, it’s worth contacting your insurer before your appointment.
